Mosaic Therapy provides on-site mental health support for children facing trauma and its effects. Mosaic therapy will come to your preschool, elementary school, middle school, or high school to provide individual and group therapy sessions for trauma.
Why we need mental health support in schools
Onsite mental health support for preschools is an essential service as we know that the developing brains of children are more vulnerable to the effects of fear and stress. Ongoing trauma, especially relationship trauma can have life long impacts on the child, many of which are documented and can lead to early death.
Children living in communities affected by gun violence, immigration, and the cycle of poverty are especially vulnerable to the damaging effects of trauma from an early age. Providing mental health support in school allows these children and teenagers an opportunity to process and heal, resulting in less outward negative behaviors and more internal coping skills that they can utilize in their day-to-day life.
How we help at Mosaic Therapy
Trauma-informed and resilience-building practices help heal and prevent further damage caused by adverse childhood experiences. When we work with teachers and therapists in schools we educate them about what trauma looks like and how to respond appropriately. Play Therapy for children who have experienced ACEs allows the child to express him or herself and can help begin healing and building resilience.
When we work with your school, we will come in and meet with children individually or in small groups. Our programming will involve use of the expressive arts, including music, art, acting out scenarios, play, games, and sensory activities to help children heal and grow in an age-appropriate manor.
Adverse childhood experiences research
The original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study demonstrated the effect of early adversity and trauma on the development of the brain. The study found when these children became adults they had a 4 to 12 % increase in risk for developing depression, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and suicide attempt. They had a 2 to 4 % increased risk of smoking, rating themselves as having poor health, and contracting a sexually transmitted disease. The number of adversities experienced was associated with a graded relationship to the presence of adult diseases such as liver disease, ischemic heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, and skeletal fractures.
We know that ACE’s impact generations. Historical trauma does not remain in the past, it’s effects are seen in the physical and mental health of generations to come.
